GEAR UP Peer Mentor

Provide support and build a mentor/mentee relationship with GEAR UP students enrolled in their first year at LCCC. This is a part-time position requiring approximately 5-15 hours per month.
Peer Mentors aid freshmen students in the transition to college life and academics and provide support through one-on-one meetings, attendance at occasional group events, and by being available for questions and guidance. Mentors must be LCCC students planning to attend LCCC for the duration of the 2014-2015 academic year.
Other tasks may be assigned based on contemporary institutional need
Start Date: As soon as practical.
Compensation: Starting at $9.73.
Conducting monthly one-on-one meetings with each mentee.
Building healthy rapport with mentees and supporting their transition to college life.
Assisting freshmen students in building community, utilizing campus resources and developing independent strategies for success.
Supporting open, 2-way communication with mentees and GU staff
Completing and turning in federal grant paperwork by the deadlines set by GU staff
Modeling professional behavior and representation of GU program
Displaying commitment to the GU Mentor Program mission (helping students persist in college)
Attending regular group mentor meetings with GU staff
Represent GEAR UP with a sense of professionalism, objectivity, and tact
Participating in mentor trainings and GEAR UP events
Minimum
Qualifications:
HS Diploma or equivalent
At least one semester of experience as a student at LCCC with a GPA of 2.5 or higher; an understanding of the skills necessary for academic/educational success; and a satisfactory background check
